On Feb. 14, 2022, the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act to end the three-week long occupation of downtown Ottawa and protests at border crossings. The act temporarily gave police extraordinary powers and allowed banks to freeze certain bank accounts. This was the first time it was invoked by the government since it replaced the War Measures Act in 1988.
